Franciscans hold a unique perspective on sacred spaces, viewing all of creation as interconnected and infused with the divine. On August 3, 2025, the Wheaton Franciscans will celebrate the 70th anniversary of Our Lady of the Angels Motherhouse and Chapel, a sacred place that continues to nurture prayer, community, and contemplative presence.

In 1946, the Franciscan Sisters were led to the Hurley Estate in DuPage County, Illinoisโ€”a land rich in natural beauty and Indigenous heritage. There, they found a home that would become the heart of their U.S. mission. Since then, the motherhouse has stood as a space of deep prayer and service, evolving to meet the changing needs of the community.

The chapel, consecrated in 1955 and renovated in 1990, reflects the simplicity and grace of Franciscan values. Its stained glass, sacred art, and peaceful intimacy invite all who enter into quiet worship and connection. Since 2013, through their Invitational Church ministry, the Wheaton Franciscans have intentionally opened their doors to all seeking a spiritual home.

Our Lady of the Angels continues to serve as the home, administrative hub, and ministry center for the Wheaton Franciscans. It also houses the administrative offices of the United States Region of the Congregation of Jesus (Loretto Sisters) and the residence of the Sisters of St. Clare. A quiet walk through the building invites reflection and spiritual connection. The artwork, photographs, and very walls speak of a living legacyโ€”a testament to the enduring mission and witness of the Sisters and their lay partners in service to God and all creation.

As we mark 70 years, we give thanks for the land, the people, and the divine presence that have shaped this sacred spaceโ€”and we move forward with hope, grounded in a mission to serve God and all creation.
