Digital Culture: Towards Effective Inculturation

Digital Culture: Towards Effective Inculturation

“The digital continent is not merely a tool; it is a world of its own, with its own culture, language, codes, and inhabitants.”

On Friday, October 23, 2026, a webinar attended by around 380 participants brought together religious from around the world involved in communication and digital mission. During the webinar, Bishop Lucio Ruiz, former Secretary of the Dicastery for Communication, invited participants to embrace digital culture as a new space for mission and evangelization.

Digital media is not merely a means of conveying messages; it is also a space for encountering the younger generation, in keeping with the mission of Jesus Christ. As digital missionaries, we are called to meet, engage in dialogue with, and understand young people, accompanying them in their digital lives and helping them discover meaning and direction.

This calls for a renewed approach to pastoral ministry, particularly in accompanying young people as they discern their vocations. The Church is invited to reach them where they are, including in the digital world, so that they may encounter the charism and spirituality of religious communities and receive guidance on their journey of discernment. Digital missionaries are therefore called to translate the Gospel into the cultural language of our time and open new paths for evangelization.

During the Jubilee of Digital Missionaries, the Pope invited us to come together and “mend the Lord’s nets.” This invitation reminds us that digital mission goes beyond the use of technology. It calls us to recognize digital culture as a space for encounter, to accompany rather than judge, to connect digital engagement with personal presence, and to equip those involved in this mission through appropriate formation.

Effective inculturation means more than simply bringing the Gospel into the digital world. It means understanding and engaging with digital culture so that the Gospel can take root in people’s lives and become a source of meaningful encounter, hope, and transformation.

Everything is mission. Do not keep it to yourself or let it remain only in your heart. Share it, live it, and bring it to others.

As digital missionaries, we are called to make the Gospel at home in digital culture, turning our faith into encounter, our words into witness, and our digital presence into an opportunity to share Christ’s love with the world.
