Peace Begins in the Heart: A Reflection from Our Sisters in the Netherlands

On the 4th and 5th of May, our sisters in the Netherlands joined the nation in commemorating two meaningful occasions: the Day of Remembrance and Liberation Day. On May 4, people across the country paused to remember all the victims of World War II, as well as those who lost their lives in wars and peace missions throughout the years. It was a solemn moment of reflection, gratitude, and prayer for all who suffered because of violence and conflict.

The following day, Liberation Day marked the end of World War II in the Netherlands and celebrated the precious gift of freedom and peace. Together with many others, our sisters gathered in prayerful remembrance and thanksgiving. These days reminded everyone not to take peace for granted, especially in a world still wounded by wars, division, and uncertainty. In the midst of an unpredictable world, we are invited to become people who carry peace within ourselves and share it with others around us.

Inspired by the words of Pope Leo XIV, who said, “Peace is built in the heart and from the heart, by eliminating pride and vindictiveness and carefully choosing our words,” the sisters prayed for mildness, compassion, and understanding among nations and peoples. True peace begins in the human heart. Even amid tension and uncertainty, we can create peace through kindness, forgiveness, listening, and love in our daily lives and relationships. May the memory of the past inspire all people to become instruments of peace, bringing light and hope to the world around them.
