“Pope Francis: The Vatican is the Home of my Last Service, not my Eternal Home”

Bells tolled in the Vatican to mark Pope Francis’ death, the supreme leader of the Roman Catholic Church. The rang out Monday (April 21, 2025) in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Catholics mourned, and the world mourned, the passing of a figure deeply concerned with humanity, simplicity, and humility. He died at the age of 88.

During his leadership, he was known for being outspoken about social inequality, advocating for justice for the poor, and calling for simplicity in life for both the faithful and church officials. This showed his strong commitment to social justice.

Pope Francis’ simplicity was further showed when he officially made his testament on June 22, 2022, stating that he wished to be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, in a simple tomb without any special ornaments, but inscribed only with “Franciscus,” the name he chose during his papacy to honor St. Francis of Assisi.

Some FCJM Sisters were praying in the Pauline Chapel of the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome.

Pope Francis also instructed that he be buried in the ground and placed in the corridor next to the Pauline Chapel, where the highly venerated icon of Mary, the Salus Populi Romani, is kept.

The Pope’s message touched many hearts because he did not want to be buried in St. Peter’s Basilica like most of his predecessors. Instead, he chose the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. This symbolizes his closeness to the marginalized those on the peripheries.

In his autobiography entitled “Hope”, released in January 2025, he said: The Vatican is the home of my last service, not my eternal home.”

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is the oldest basilica in Rome dedicated to the Virgin Mary, built in the 5th century after the Council of Ephesus declared Mary to be the “Mother of God”. This basilica is not only a witness to architectural and theological history, but also a symbol of the Church’s gentle, nurturing and intimate relationship with the faithful.

Some people prayed in front of the statue of Ave Regina in Maria Maggiore, Rome.

Another reason for Pope Francis’ desire to rest at Santa Maria Maggiore is deeply personal and reflects his deep devotion to the Virgin Mary. From the beginning of his pontificate, Pope Francis has shown great closeness and respect for Mary. He frequently visits the basilica to pray before the Salus Populi Romani (Salvation of the Roman People), an ancient and highly venerated icon believed to have protective powers over the city of Rome.

These visits underscore the strong spiritual bond between Pope Francis and the Virgin Mary at this site.

The desire to be buried at Santa Maria Maggiore can be seen as an expression of gratitude and surrender to Mary’s protection.

This choice may also carry a symbolic message, emphasizing the importance of devotion to Mary in the life of a Christian.
