Happy Birthday, Harapan Jaya Rehabilitation Center: From Seeds of Love to a Home of Hope

Monday, November 17, 2025, coinciding with the Feast of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, marked a deeply meaningful day for Harapan Jaya Rehabilitation Center. The 44th anniversary celebration was not just a commemoration of the institution’s long journey, but a heartfelt celebration of lives touched, dignity restored, and love quietly at work.

Under a beautifully decorated grand tent, the extended Harapan Jaya family gathered in gratitude: FCJM Sisters, the Foundation’s Board, donors, the family of Sr. M. Jeanette van Passeen FCJM, and individuals with disabilities who are the very reason this mission continues each day. This year’s theme, “Strengthened by Faith that Sees, Sent to Serve with Eyes of Love”, captures the essence of Harapan Jaya: a ministry born not from theory, but from the courage to see others through the eyes of Christ.

The thanksgiving celebrations began with the Eucharist, celebrated by RP Emanuel Sembiring, OFM, Pastor of St. Peter and Paul Parish Batu Lima and Moderator of FCJM Indonesia Province. During the Mass, all attendees were invited to return to the source of the love that fuels Harapan Jaya’s work faith tested through service, and love lived through tangible presence to those most in need.

The most moving moment of the day was the presence of the founder, Sr. M. Jeanette van Passeen FCJM, who traveled from the Netherlands to join the celebration. She is not just the founder; 44 years ago, she planted the first seeds of this work of compassion with small hands, a big heart, and love that never sought recognition. Her presence reminded everyone that Harapan Jaya is more than an institution—it is a spiritual legacy rooted in the FCJM charism: a love that burns, guided by the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The celebration was further honored by the presence of the FCJM General Council from Rome, Sr. M. Magdalena Schmitz and Sr. M. Evifania Sinaga, affirming that Harapan Jaya is not merely a local endeavor, but part of a global mission bringing mercy to the most vulnerable. The Ulos shawls presented in their honor symbolized not only cultural respect but also prayers and hopes that the flame of service continues to burn brightly.

During performances and prayers of thanksgiving, individuals with disabilities were at the heart of the celebration. Their sincere, joyful, and spirited faces were a reminder that Harapan Jaya is not just a home, but a place of restoration where every person is encouraged to grow, contribute, and recognize their inherent worth. The group photos captured more than memories—they reflected a large family built on faithfulness, perseverance, and quiet, steadfast love.

Entering its 44th year, Harapan Jaya celebrates not with pride in accomplishments, but with humility and renewed commitment to be a channel of God’s mercy. The FCJM Sisters and all supporters reaffirmed their dedication to continue serving those often overlooked, to see through eyes of faith, and to serve with hearts of love. Harapan Jaya was born from love, sustained by love, and guided by the Holy Spirit in every step. May it continue to shine as a beacon of warmth, a home of restoration, and a place where hope always finds its way—for today and the years to come.
