Where Faith Begins to Grow
On Saturday, 6 September, a remarkable celebration took place at the Nhakale outstation in Nanthomba Parish, Dowa, Malawi. With hearts full of anticipation, fifty children and young people received the sacraments of Baptism and First Holy Communion.
Nhakale is a small community nestled in the mountains. Surrounded by natural beauty, the people live a simple life. Most are farmers, while a few serve as teachers at the local primary school. Despite the humble setting, the spirit of faith and joy was deeply present throughout the celebration.
Together with Tiyamike Henrico, a young woman eager to participate, I joined the community for this special occasion, celebrated by Father Sebastian. Entering the small church, I felt as though I had been transported back to the early days of the Church. Everything was simple and unpretentious. The church itself was modest in size, and everyone found a place seated on the floor, waiting patiently for Holy Mass to begin.

The children radiated excitement as they prepared to receive the sacraments. Their joy was matched by the quiet strength of the adults and godparents who stood behind them, offering prayers and guidance. This moment of faith and community was a testimony to the deep roots of the Church in even the most remote places.
Now, the children carry within them the joy of their Baptism and First Holy Communion. As they continue their journey of faith, let us pray that they may grow ever stronger in belief, and that they may find lasting joy and fulfilment in living out the gift they have received.
